Esa-Pekka Salonen’s fascination with timbre and texture is stripped bare in this concert of his music on a smaller scale.
Esa-Pekka Salonen’s smaller-scale works reveal, as if under a microscope, his fascination with the intricacies of music. His 17-minute Dichotomie, which he wrote in 2000, is a fascinating creation that ‘deploys aggressive but constantly shifting rhythmic mechanisms whose origins lie in Prokofiev, while its second [movement] seems closer to the flowing spontaneity of the Ligeti Études’ (Gramophone). It is a powerful addition to the modern piano repertoire and a highly rewarding listening experience.
