Northern Streams Festival

The two guest artists from Finland to take part in the festival are Elina Lappalainen (double bass /vocals) and Olli Kari (accordionist). They have joined up with Jon Hjellum Brodal from Norway to create the trio KLB especially for the Northern Streams Festival.

KLB will feature crispy Nordic tunes from Norway and Finland plus original compositions with punchy bass solos, flaming bowings and plenty of moustache wax, all part of the experience.

Elina and Jon first created the soundscape to the inter-Nordic dance phenomenon Ruija by Väkevä Collective in 2015. This collaboration led the duo to continue on its own. Elina and Olli have played together for almost ten years, from Helsinki Music Centre to Beijing and back. They have worked in close collaboration with the Finnish professional and semi-professional folk dance scene by composing, playing and arranging music for dance performances during many years – sometimes even taking a step or two themselves. The trio’s extensive knowledge gives the perfect opportunity for everyone to get acquainted with Nordic songs, tunes and dances.

Olli belongs to the new edge of Finnish contemporary folk music. Having graduated from the very first Nordic Master of Folk Music joint programme (2011) between Sibelius Academy, the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm and the Nielsen Conservatory in Odense, Olli has given concerts across Europe. With accordions of all sizes as Olli’s main instrument, he currently spends his days delivering archaic shepherd tunes with the band Armas, and folk punk attitude with Vimma Allstars.

Elina is in the front row of Finnish folk ’bass-ism’. Recently graduated from the Sibelius Academy folk music department, Elina tours a lot with her band Hyvä Trio, combining folk tradition, new compositions and stage clownery. Throughout her career, Elina has examined the double bass’ role in folk music and what it could be on an academic level. She especially loves playing in small bands, bringing the bass to the front, together with the other instruments.
