Esa-Pekka Salonen conductor
Audra McDonald mezzo soprano
In its satire, kitsch, sensuality, eroticism, freedom and excess, Berlin’s cabaret – Kabarett – underground was the embodiment of Weimar culture.
Esa-Pekka Salonen opens the series with a theatrical cabaret programme of music and song, including songs by Kurt Weill and his contemporaries, and an operatic sketch with an unusual structure by Paul Hindemith: a tragedy which is then replayed sung in reverse, with the result of a happy ending.
Leading the cabaret line will be multi Tony Award-winning singer Audra McDonald, a star of American stage, screen and concert platform.
