Adrian Biddell was head of Sotheby’s 19th Century European Paintings department from 1999-2015 and now runs his own business where he sources works of art, arranges private sales and advises collectors.
He is also regularly engaged as a charity auctioneer.
While at Sotheby’s he encouraged the National Gallery to bid for Gallen-Kallela’s painting Lake Keitele which, judging from the sale of postcards, fridge magnets and other merchandise, is one of the most popular paintings in the collection of the National Gallery.
In his talk to us Adrian will put Gallen-Kallela in a broader European context and, if any of you have an undiscovered painting signed Axel Gallén in your attic, I am sure he will be happy to help you dispose of it!
