Finland’s big year 2017

Finland became an independent state on 6 December 1917. The centenary of Finland’s independence in 2017 was the most significant commemorative year for this generation of Finns. The Embassy of Finland in London gathered information about events planned in the UK.

The theme of the centenary year was ‘Together’. Accordingly, the Finland 100 programme was a joint effort, built together by the Finnish people and friends of Finland.

Finland 100 years and the official programme

Finland's centenary celebration year started in the beginning of 2017 and culminated in Finland's Independence Day on 6th December. The first third of the year concentrated on Finland's history over the past 100 years. The programme in the summer months were mostly concentrate in outdoor events in order to enjoy the lovely Finnish summer. On the third weekend of August the countdown started for 'Hundred days till Hundred'.
